World Book Q. R. 16
Q is the 17th letter of our alphabet. It was also a letter in the alphabet used by the Semites, who once lived in Syria and Palestine. They named it qoph, which may have been their word for ape or monkey, and they wrote it with a picture symbol that may represent a monkey. The Greeks later took the letter into their alphabet for a time, calling it koppa. The Romans adopted it from the Greeks, and gave it its present capital Q form. They also originated the usage of following q with u. See Alpha- bet.
